Everytime I find a website that "used to do reciprocal linking" they are now conforming to "Google's webmaster best practice document."
Has anyone ever read that?
I have read it recently and no where does it say that reciprocal linking is "frowned upon." Yes, one way links are going to give more weight. But they've always given more weight. Think of it this way: Google bases it's PR algorithm on the number of outgoing/incoming links on a website. If the outgoing links outweigh the incoming the site is given a higher PR. This is why webmasters block robots files, so Google sees more incoming links then outgoing.
It seems like 80% of Internet Marketers either get their News from a cereal box, or they believe everything people tell them in whatever forum they frequent. Myself I visit webmaster world, which is an excellent site.
But this three way business is absolutely ridiculous. Now webmasters expect everything for nothing. I always get e-mails that say hey, post my link, I will post your link here. The "here" is never the same site that is linking back to me, it is always some crappy spam looking or shopping related site, and the pages where "my link would be posted" is always a 0 PR page.
So my reply of course will be, sorry, not interested, try posting my link somewhere that has a PR.
If you are new to Internet Marketing you can learn a lot from this. The bottom line: if pursuing a reciprocal link campaign, try to post links on a page that has PR and is indexed. Or, if doing a three way, same thing.
It seems now everyone blocks robots; if everyone on the Internet does this soon there will be no reason for reciprocal or three way exchanges.
The evolution of Google
The truth of linking now is very simple: post links on your existing sites. Reciprocal links, inbound links etc. seem to have less weight then they used to. The sites with the most about of backlinks used to rank at the top; this has changed. You no longer need a lot of inbound links to rank well. Just establish links from some of your existing websites; post Adsense and wait for the site to get spidered. The more pages you build, the more inbound links Google will see to your site. If you have a website of 5,000 pages, you should rank pretty well for keywords, as Google sees each page as a backlink to the homepage.
Furthermore, the evolution of the web is moving along to the laser guided keyword phrases being the best ones. Short keyword phrases like "blue widget" are not worth optimizing for anymore. But long laser keyword phrases like "blue widget on Saturday morning" still work really well.
