Title Tags
Everyone knows title tags are important. They are the line of text the browser will see when your site shows up on Google. How relevant it is to their search determines how likely they are to click it, and don't forget Google needs to assign it weight as well in order for it to show up at all. If your page is about widgets, specialize further and go to blue fuzzy widgets, yellow widgets, green widgets etc.
For example take CD-ROMs, if you wanted to sell CD-Roms, your pages would be blank-cdroms, blank-dvdroms, high capacity cd-roms, etc. Things like that. You need to use proper Keyword Tools in order to find the right cominbation. The title tag of your homepage should include at least 4 of the things you promote on the site (typically, each subject gets a page). Then you will repeat your title tag in your headers on your site. If you have more headers then mentioned in your title tag congratulations, you have a site with lots of content.
Meta Description Tags
Also important. If the search engine dosen't pick up your meta description tag for the description of your site that comes under the title, it will instead display the first sentence or two on your website. Which may or may not work for you depending upon how well your site is ranked, and how popular it is (backlinks are good for this).
If you want the search engine to index your meta descripton tags, be sure to launch the site with them or you may be waiting a while for the listings to update (especially with Yahoo).
