The plot used in the new Star Trek movie is somewhat far fetched, as far as plots go. It seems like when writers run out of ideas they throw some time travel into the mix, because with time travel, everything that was once known about the Star Trek universe can change in an instant. However, with the plot revolving around an advanced time traveling Romulan crew, it leaves a lot of room for interesting plot turns, lots of action, and some concepts not seen before in Star Trek movies.
For example, take the space jump that Kirk, Sulu and Olsen do when they take on the Romulan mining rig. You've never seen people jump out of a shuttle before, enter orbit, land, and then start fighting hand to hand. Not to mention Sulu's cool little action sequence when he lands on the rig, almost getting incinerated and then pulling out his sword. And we all thought he was going to pull out a puny rapier or something when he said fencing! Hell no. This is Sulu we're talking about, played by John Cho. John was in the Harold & Kumar movies which are widly popular and successful, along with a rash of other teen movies if you don't recognize him.
The actors in the new Star Trek movie do an awesome job too. I really like the concept of having teenagers and going back to when "Starfleet began." But to be honest I think people are getting a little tired of prequels. Star Trek Enterprise for example was another try at a prequel series which didn't go too well. However, for a prequel, this movie is done masterfully. I think it was just too much to use Shatner or the original crew (as many of them aren't around anymore like Scott); but using a teenage crew fits in nicely with the storyline, almost as if the storyline was modeled to the benefit of being able to use the teenage actors. But the actors in this movie quickly capture your attention and keep it there. Chris Pine as James T Kirk does an excellent job; and Zachary Quinto plays an excellent Spock. Most are used to Zachary from the show Heroes; he is most definitely an excellent actor and is on his rise to glory. This movie might just push him up a bit into the eyes of more talent scouts in Hollywood.
It's nice to see the movie showing alternate sides of each character as well. The movie shows Kirk as a wanderer in search of purpose at the beginning of the movie, hitting on Uhura and getting beaten up by security. It shows the human side of Spock which is usually hidden, the side that shows emotion when his mother dies or when Uhura comforts him. All in all a good watch, but not a movie that die hard trek fans will consider one of the best. Leave that to the sequel - the sequel to the prequel.

Ultimately it sucked. Ya don't blow up Vulcan. Ya don't write another freaking TIME TRAVEL plot? Time travel plots STINK. Its such a CRUTCH. Is there a decent writer left? Sure. great graphics. But you cannot DESTROY the fictional world that you are supposedly honoring with the movie. POS by Kent J posted on Thursday, March 04, 2010 |
